Pinturak San Lukasen Ebanjelioan (Lc, 26-38) deskribatutako unea irudikatzen du. Bertan, Gabriel goiaingeruak Jesus, Jainkoaren Semea, erdituko duela iragartzen dio Mariari. La pintura representa el momento descrito en el Evangelio de San Lucas (Lc, 26-38) en el que el arcángel Gabriel anuncia a María que dará a luz a Jesús, el Hijo de Dios. Murillo transforma la escena doméstica en una de gloria celestial mediante su color translúcido y sus vaporosos efectos pictóricos. Una luz dorada divina ilumina a María arrodillada mientras ángeles voladores se arremolinan sobre ella. Frente a María, el ángel Gabriel señala a la paloma del Espíritu Santo que desciende. Las preocupaciones terrenales de María, simbolizadas por los objetos que la rodean, se olvidan en este momento de revelación divina. El gesto humilde de la Virgen, con las manos entrecruzadas sobre el pecho, correspondería al momento denominado humiliatio , es decir, el que acompaña a las palabras de Lc 1, 38: "He aquí la esclava del Señor.

The painting depicts the moment described in the Gospel of Saint Luke (Luke 26-38) in which the archangel Gabriel announces to Mary that she will give birth to Jesus, the Son of God. A divine golden light illuminates Mary kneeling while flying angels swirl above her. In front of Mary, the angel Gabriel points to the dove of the Holy Spirit descending. Mary',s earthly concerns, symbolized by the objects surrounding her, are forgotten in this moment of divine revelation. The Virgin',s humble gesture, with her hands clasped on her chest, corresponds to the moment known as humiliatio, that is, the moment that accompanies the words of Luke 1:38: "Behold, the handmaid of the Lord."
