This life-size walnut sculpture of Saint Peter depicts the apostle with his classic attributes: a long, full beard, painstakingly carved into curls or locks, and abundant hair that distinguishes him from his usually bald colleague, Saint Paul. The absence of hands makes it difficult to identify the original attributes, although it is likely that he held the keys to the Kingdom of Heaven (his symbol par excellence, based on *Matthew 16:19*) or a book (an allusion to his doctrinal authority). The quality of the carving, the material, and its size suggest that the piece could have been created for a significant space, such as an altarpiece.
